PSC Commissioner wants more public notice for energy projects

A member of North Dakota’s Public Service Commission wants to see a different system of notifying nearby landowners when an energy project is being proposed in their area.

Right now, the PSC publishes a legal notice in local newspapers. Commissioner Randy Christmann says while that’s all well and good, it isn’t enough.

"I bet you the newspapers are just filled with pages and pages of legal notices," said Christmann. "I don't think we can expect those landowners to sit and pour through them all the time. They're not attorneys -- they're farmers and ranchers."

Christmann says the PSC should look at coming up with a different system of notifying landowners.

Commissioner Julie Fedorchak says she’s been talking to companies to get them involved in more direct notices to affected landowners.
