March 5th will be “Canada Day” at the North Dakota Legislature.
It’s being promoted as a day to show the friendship between the two countries – and especially between North Dakota and its Canadian neighbors.
Brian Shipley is with the Canadian Counsel General’s office in Minneapolis. He says people may not understand the magnitude of the relationship.
"People don't realize that Canada is, by far, North Dakota's largest export market," said Shipley. "We're the largest export market for 35 of the 50 states -- in most cases, larger that most of the next export markets combined. In fact, North Dakota sells more to Canada than it sells to every other country in the world put together."
Shipley says North Dakota has an especially close relationship with the Prairie Provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
