Grand Forks Herald

6/26/2005:

George E. Winship established the Grand Forks Herald on this day in 1879. The Grand Forks Plaindealer was in circulation at the time, but Winship claimed it was time for another paper, “to advertise and build up our beautiful and thrifty town, to publish and proclaim abroad the wonderful fertility and inexhaustible resources of Northern Dakota, and to conduce to the welfare and happiness of the whole people.”

Winship claimed he located there “for the purpose of making a living and as much money as (I) can.”

The first edition reported temperatures had been in the 90s during the past week, the Mansard House hotel had opened, and one of the advertisements offered a tonic to remove “that ugly tan.”
