Along with the rest of the country, North Dakotans have become very health conscious. Zumba and other workout classes are very popular. Exercising to music seemed to have it’s beginnings back in the early 1980s when the Baby Boomers began to see the signs of middle age spread. In April of ‘82, Jane Fonda introduced the video, Workout, and she was quickly followed by others such as Richard Simmons, and Judi Missett who created Jazercise. But examples of the exercise-to-music fad appeared much sooner. On this date in 1922, it was reported that a Minot couple had invested in six phonographic records featuring music and exercise instructions to help them burn the fat. Too early for the Charleston, however, which didn’t arrive on the scene until the following year.
