Ceres Firefighters

3/11/2012:

Several female students of the North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo turned into reluctant firefighters on this date in 1924. The girls, residents of Ceres Hall, had been up late studying when they noticed smoke in the hallway. They woke the House President and tracked up and down the halls looking for the source of the smoke. Eventually, they found a burning box of trash in the Home Economics Cooking room. They called the Fire Department and grabbed a hose and some buckets while they waited. By the time the firefighters arrived, they were shocked to find the fire extinguished and the girls still inside the building. Turns out, the college had locked all the windows and exits hoping to keep unwanted men out of the dormitory, not thinking the women would ever need to get out!
