9/22/2012:
The story was circulating on this date in 1929, that Deputy Sheriff Warnes of McKenzie County was travelling when he came upon a car going in the same direction. He was in a hurry and tried to pass, but whenever he came close, it would cut in his way, forcing him back or into the ditch.
Finally tiring of this, the Sheriff pulled out his six-shooter and fired above the car. That got the attention of those in the offending vehicle, and when they pulled over, Warnes laid into them, “pointing out that such foolish driving may someday take a person’s life besides causing damage to cars.”
The Emmons County Free Press wrote, “Oh, for a sheriff like that.”
