Spurned Advances

7/7/2013:

Mandan reported a shooting incident worthy of a modern-day soap opera on this date in 1923. Fred Massingham, a happily married rancher and father from Morton County, was arrested on July 6th for shooting at Mr. Leroy Till in broad daylight in downtown Mandan.

Apparently Mr. Till had made unwanted advances upon Mrs. Massingham. Massingham was standing in front of the Lewis and Clark Hotel when he saw Till near the Northern Pacific train platform; the rancher shot at Massingham with his revolver, missing by only inches and sending passersby into a panic. Although Massingham was arrested, he was released of all charges weeks later after Till mysteriously disappeared from the area.
