Expanding Our Heritage

5/6/2015:

The land of North Dakota has quite a history, and no place has done as much to keep that history alive as the North Dakota Heritage Center. They maintain archives, present exhibits, preserve artifacts, and tend 56 historic sites. There are even programs to provide children hands-on learning experiences. For many years the center sought to expand. Their first efforts began over 30 years ago, but it wasn’t until this date in 2009 that Governor John Hoeven signed legislation appropriating almost 40 million dollars, contingent on another 12 million from private sources.

The funding made it possible to build a 97,000 square-foot addition for new exhibits. The displays include dinosaurs, agriculture, early residents, and even the recent oil boom. The additions have been quite a success. Over 4,400 people attended the opening on November 2nd, 2014. This was more than expected, which pleased the staff, and it showed how much the people of North Dakota enjoy their history.

The mission of North Dakota Heritage Center is “to identify, preserve, interpret, and promote the heritage of North Dakota and its people.” Understanding the roots of North Dakota and how it began keeps our growing history alive … and from the dinosaurs to the first people to walk this land, the Heritage Center helps remember them.
