Kelly Nelson is celebrating 25 years of decorating her Grand Forks yard for Halloween

Halloween is right around the corner! The old-fashioned decorating of the house is so much fun, and there’s a house that really rolls out the red carpet in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

It’s not too gory, but it is kind of spooky. It’s above and beyond anything you’ve ever seen: The house of Kelly Nelson.

Kelly has been decorating her house for 25 years, and she themes it every year. This year’s theme is “A Gathering of Unfortunate Events” – it features 21 figures, and the scenarios that led to their doom. The figures are wearing watches, socks, jewelry, neck ties, shoes, hats … the attention to details is really impressive. Lights are strategically positioned to create a 'mise en scene,' and here and there are puffs from a fog machine. One could visit the house several times and still see something new.

Tom Brosseau talked to Kelly about where she finds her commitment and inspiration — and, most importantly, where the monsters come from. Listen to their conversation above.
