In 1989, the rebuilt Custer House was opened to the public at Ft. Lincoln State Park south of Mandan. That’s where the Seventh Cavalry was headquartered.
Sunday, that milestone was celebrated with a rededication -- and celebration of the 25th anniversary.
State Parks and Recreation Director Mark Zimmerman says the Custer House was opened during North Dakota’s Centennial Year.
"A lot of work went into the research, raising the money, getting all the ducks in line, and actually construct the house," Zimmerman said.
US Senator Heidi Heitkamp said the house was not built with government money – and she paid tribute to the volunteers who raised the money and helped rebuild the house.
"This is a place that defines us," said Heitkamp. "This is part of our heritage, part of our culture and part of our history."
The house has been a tourist attraction – and has hosted special events. And since it’s been open, other structures – such as a cavalry barracks – have been rebuilt.
