UPDATE: 900 customers still without power in Bismarck-Mandan

(as of 4 PM Saturday)

A spokesman for MDU says virtually all customers in the Bismarck-Mandan area should be back on line by Sunday night.

A powerful thunderstorm bringing heavy rain, hail and wind gusts over 80 miles an hour hit the area Friday night. The winds downed trees and power lines, and 10,000 MDU customers lost power.

"Right now we have about 28 crewmen working in Bismarck and Mandan to restore electric service," said MDU's Tim Rasmussen. "We're making pretty good progress. And we;re thinking with some pretty good confidence that late Sunday night, we should have the majority of service restored."

Residents continue to clean up downed trees and branches. The Bismarck landfill will be open Sunday from 8 AM until 6 PM. And the city will start collecting debris curbside.
