UPDATE: Vast majority of MDU customers have their power back

As of 6 PM Sunday, MDU says all but about 120 of their Bismarck-Mandan customers have their power back on.

A powerful storm Friday night brought heavy rains and high winds -- gusting to over 80 miles per hour. It took down trees and branches, and a number of power lines. Nearly 10,000 customers lost their lights after 9 PM Friday.

MDU spokesman Tim Rasmussen says crews worked nearly around the clock to restore power. He says all the main power lines have been restored, and the 120 customers still in the dark have problems unique to their houses. He says those are also being taken care of.

"If you are without power now, please report your outage to 1-800-MDU-Fast," said Rasmussen. "We want to make sure we have all customers without service in our system so that power can be restored quickly."

Rasmussen says the crews report a lot of positive feedback from customers.

"When this work was going on Sunday -- Father's Day -- many of our crewmen received Father's Day wishes," Rasmussen said. "Many of them were treated with beverages and food. One crew got some fresh-made beef jerky. It was wonderful."

Rasmussen says MDU appreciates the patience and kindness shown to the service crews during this ordeal.
