A celebration of the buffalo – and the role it has played in the west.
That’s the purpose of a new tour – called the Historic Buffalo Trail Tour. It will be self-guided, and will feature 10 sites in North and South Dakota, near the towns of Hettinger, Reeder and Scranton in North Dakota, and the South Dakota towns of Lemmon, Bison and Buffalo.
Francie Berg of Hettinger has written the self guided tour book.
"I hope they'll (visitors) appreciate our area more than they have in the past," Berg said at a ceremony held at the Heritage Center in Bismarck. "And I hope they realize that this story could not be re-enacted anywhere else. It's our story."
North Dakota Tourism Director Sara Otte Coleman said people from all over the world are fascinated by the American West.
"We think this is going to be a great fit," Coleman said. "We market under the 'Real America' brand with South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming, and this is a great tie-in."
The tour officially opens Saturday, with a kick-off event in Hettinger.
