The North Dakota House has killed a measure which would have added restrictions to beginning drivers.
The bill would have increased the time a beginning driver has to have a permit from 6 months to one year, and it would have imposed further passenger restrictions.
Supporters said it’s meant to provide more training for the younger driver. But opponentgs argued it takes away parental responsibility.
"This is aimed to restrict all drivers ikn that age range, because of the actions of a few," argued Rep. Cole Christensen (R-Rogers). "I believe this takes away the ability for parents to decide what is best for their children, as they learn, grow and accept responsibility as they mature towards adulthood."
Christensen said if there are problems, let the parents do what they believe is best for their child.
The bill failed on a 73 to 18 vote.
