A unit of the North Dakota National Guard has been alerted for duty at the southwestern border of the US.
The Bismarck-based 957th Engineer Company, Multi-Role Bridge, will mobilize this fall.
"We anticipate it will support the US Customs and Border Patrol, whatever type missions they might have," said Guard spokesman Bill Prokopyk.
Prokopyk said he doesn’t know at this point what the exact mission will be.
"I view this mobilization similar to any mobilization for the Global War on Terrorism," Prokopyk said. "Once the Department of the Army identifies a need, they reach out to a National Guard unit through the National Guard bureau, and mobilizations proceed from there."
Right now, the North Dakota Natural Guard has around 375 soldiers and airmen mobilized. 75 are mobilized overseas, and 70 are still on duty in Washington, DC.
