Public hearing on hate crime ordinance postponed

nd.gov

The Bismarck City Commission has postponed a public hearing on a proposed hate crime ordinance. Commissioner Nancy Guy requested to add hate crimes to the existing Simple Assault, Harassment, Criminal Mischief and Disorderly Conduct ordinances but could not attend the Tuesday hearing due to an unexpected family matter. Jannelle Combs is City Attorney.

"To change a statute or an ordinance at the city level, we have two meetings that are required. The last one has to be a public hearing where there is advertisement for the public hearing and then, it's up to the commission on whether they want to adopt it or not. "

The public is encouraged to attend the hearing which has been moved to the next commission meeting on June 14th.
