Doukhobor History ~ "Willow Creek Folk School"

Doukhobor Society of Saskatoon

Wednesday, July 22, 2020 - A recent Dakota Datebook on the religious group called the Doukhobors attracted the ire of some listeners. The original article in the Hope Pioneer from 1908 reported on an incident with the headline “Armed Fanatics,” but it turns out they weren’t Doukhobors! Here to provide a more accurate history of the Doukhobors are Jonathan Kalmakoff, who is steeped in Doukhobor history; and Dr. Ashleigh Androsoff of the University of Saskatchewan, who specializes in the history of Western Canada. She is also working on a book, titled “Spirit Wrestling: The ‘Doukhobor Problem’ in Russia and in Canada.”

Then, NDSU historian Tom Isern not only shares a weekly Plains Folk essay on Main Street, he’s also hosting an online event every week he calls the “Willow Creek Folk School,” sharing songs and tales on Facebook live from his home. He joins us to invite you to join the school, a perfect activity while safely isolated.
