Love, Honor and Obey?

9/30/2007:

Love, honor and obey?

Judges in Fargo agreed that in the marriage ceremony, couples must vow to “love and honor” each other. When it came to obeying each other however, not all of the judges were in agreement.

On this date in 1922, the Fargo Forum reported that three of the four local judges had dropped the “obey” portion of the wedding vows. Judge Sharp said he didn’t foresee him ever including it in one of his ceremonies.

For Justice Munson, to “love, cherish and care for” each other seems to cover all the bases. According to the judge, if couples honestly apply these vows, “it’s not likely I’ll see them back in my court for a divorce.”
