If this sounds like a scene from the old Wild West, it’s because it was!
On this date in 1910, a runaway team of horses was flying through the streets of Bismarck. The team broke free on the eastern end of the city, raced down Broadway, then headed over to Main.
Near the Catholic Church, it careened off a delivery wagon, knocking it over. Bismarck pedestrians were scattering everywhere to get out of harm's way.
Sheriff McGillis, seeing the event, whipped up his own team of horses and raced ahead, slowing the runaways. Seeing the two teams coming, weather bureau director Roberts jumped from a stone wall, grabbed the lead horse and brought them to a halt.
The horses, wagons, and rescuers all somehow managed to escape injury.
