State Library

11/29/2009:

The North Dakota Governor's Conference on Library and Information Services began on this day in 1990. The conference was held to prepare for the national White House conference on Library and Information Services the following year, and was held to address the key concerns of literacy, equal access, productivity through marketing, and preservation and access to public information. These concerns were specifically addressed in the state as part of the wider national theme of "Information: Gateway to our Future." Governor George Sinner appointed the State Library, and State Librarian Patricia Harris, in charge of the conference in 1989. Both the state and national conferences highlighted the important role that libraries play in educating the American public. The North Dakota State Library was established in 1907, and was housed originally in a single room in the State Capitol building.
