8/28/2010:
American Legion Baseball, which got its start in South Dakota in 1925, was the first program to provide a national baseball tournament for teenagers.
In 1962, Bismarck hosted the program's "Little World Series." Everyone got into the spirit of the program, with Governor Guy designating it "North Dakota American Legion Baseball Week," and Mayor Lips declaring it "Little World Series Week."
The first game was played on this date by teams from Billings, Montana and Hampton, Virginia, but it was the unusual names of the players from Hawaii that proved to be a challenge for the mainly German-Norwegian tongues in the community, with broadcaster Jim Adleson deciding not to not even attempt the pronunciations!
