Ted Weems

9/12/2010:

On this date in 1946, the orchestra of Ted Weems played in the Jamestown armory. Weems was a nationally recognized bandleader who had risen to prominence during the 1930s. He also wrote music, and though some of his more popular songs, such as "Jig Time" and "The One Man Band," may or may not be remembered, some of the songsters he helped along the way, such as crooner Perry Como, surely are.

So, the program was a marked occasion for Jamestown local soloist Leslie Lange, who sang with the band through arrangements made by the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

It all went well: Lange received calls for an encore after his first song, and consequently sang another. And afterward, Weems praised his singing.
