6/3/2012:
Governor John Hoeven nominated the design for the North Dakota Commemorative Quarter on this date in 2005. A nine-member commission had been tasked with recommending three narratives that defined the state to U.S. Mint artists, who would create designs to be selected by the state. North Dakotans submitted narratives defining the unique history and importance of the state, and the three themes of Agriculture, Landscape, and the Badlands were selected and passed on to Mint artists. Mint Engraver Donna Weaver’s design, ‘Badlands with Bison,’ was ultimately selected by the commission, and placed upon the 39th quarter in the 50-State Quarter Program. The quarters were minted in Denver and Philadelphia, and first released in August of 2006.
