Interim committee looking at agriculture statute rewrite

An interim Legislative committee is working on a rewrite of the agriculture statutes.

"It's a huge task," said House Minority Leader Kenton Onstad (D-Parshall). "This is our fourth session working on this rewrite."

Onstad says the Legislature started this process four sessions ago. And he says the goal is to group the statutes dealing with agriculture – to make them easier to find.

"We're trying to separate livestock and agriculture," Onstad said. "They would be two separate chapers. And I think it will make it easier for the user who wants to look up subject items."

And Onstad says some things that come under ag stautues may be transferred to other chapters of the North Dakota Century Code.

"Some things have become commercial," said Onstad. "The State Fair -- very commercial -- is under ag. And we're looking to put that maybe into Commerce."

Onstad says APUC – the Agriculture Products Utilization Commission – is already in the Commerce chapter. He says he hopes to have this project completed in the 2017 Legislature.
