DSU 'dual mission' plans continue

Dickinson State University continues on its “dual mission” path.

DSU President Dr. Thomas Mitzel said this is to meet demand from industry in western North Dakota.

For example, Mitzel said in May, the University held two communications workshops, and in July started a “Certified Nursing Assistance” program. He said both had overwhelming response.

Mitzel said a task force was appointed to look at things that needed to be addressed quickly, and those programs will be rolled out this fall.

"We have seven different programs that should be out this fall, all related to dual mission," Mitzel said.

Mitzel said right now, the majority are non-credit.

"That's because the industry wants something very quickly," Mitzel said. "A lot of it's for current workers, so they can get the skills to be promoted, and go further in their current careers."

Mitzel said the University is now working on implementing two-year associate degrees, some in cooperation with other colleges.

"We will be working very closely with Lake Region Community College on a police academy, that will train police in western North Dakota, so they don't have to move," Mitzel said. "And we're working with Bismarck State College for a welding program."

Mitzel said he will also be in contact with TrainND.

"If we can run programs through them, we don't have to be redundant," Mitzel said.

Mitzel said with a dual mission, DSU can be flexible with workforce.

Mitzel said he thinks DSU will see some increased enrollment, because of the implementation of the two-year associate degree programs.

"For students who aren't sure if they want a four-year degree, this gives them a two-year program," Mitzel said. "And if they want a four year degree, they don't have to move -- they can transfer directly into the four-year program."

Mitzel said his hope is it makes higher education more friendly, for those who seek it.
