Recent rain, snow causing some road construction delays

The recent rain and snow over parts of North Dakota has affected some road construction projects.

"It isn't just the rain days, but it's the days afterwards, trying to get some drying time," said North Dakota Department of Transportation operations director Wayde Swenson.

Swenson said it really affects those projects where contractors are doing a full reconstruction of the road.

"We're trying to get another hard surface back on the roadway," Swenson said. "Those are the projects that are highly impacted."

For example, Swenson said contractors worked Friday and Saturday to pave a project on I-94 in the Richardton and Hebron area. He also pointed to the US 83 bypass project in Minot, where the project was to make it a four lane highway. Swenson said that will likely be finished next year.

"We're hopeful we can get that four-lane accomplished," Swenson said. "But if we don't, there will still be a two lane hard surface for everybody to drive on."

Swenson said contractor are working hard to make sure roads have a hard surface for the winter months.

"They're definitely making the push," Swenson said, "We're very appreciative of the work they're doing to get it done."
