Surge bill passes

The state Senate has passed the so called “surge bill.”

The bill would provide $1.1 billion in funding for infrastructure needs in the oil patch. And it’s on a fast-track – so that the money could become available soon to take advantage of the 2015 construction season.

"I know tyhis sounds like a lot of money," said Senate Majority Leader Rich Wardner (R-Dickinson). "But I'll guarantee you that it will make a difference out there."

Wardner says this bill is his highest priority.

The vote was 44 to 2. One of the “no” votes came from Sen. Dwight Cook (R-Mandan), who talked about the latest revenue forecasts, based on falling oil prices.

"I would love to vote for this bill," said Cook. "But considering our financial situation, the uncertainty of the future, this bill is too rich for me."

The measure will now be considered in the House.
