New NDUS Chancellor says ND has a 'wonderful' system
North Dakota’s new Chancellor of Higher Education says the state has a wonderful University System.
Mark Hagerott has spent some time looking at a number of documents, as well as attending a Board of Higher Education retreat, as he prepares for a “listening tour” of the state. He says he’s impressed with what he’s seen so far.
"It confirms in my mind that we have a wonderful system that can meet the needs of parents and students," said Hagerott. "When they roll in , classes are ready to go. I'm seeing all the preparations for the fall, and I can see that it's adapting to the enrollment changes and adjustments. Also, it's creating new programs and being innovative. It's a great system doing great work."
Hagerott says there’s always room for improvement – and that’s why he will soon start his “listening tour.” He says he will likely start with legislative leaders -- because he believes the relationship between higher education and lawmakers needs to be strengthened.
"There were some low points in the last couple of years," said Hagerott. "That's why the legislators are the first priority, to meet with them."
After that, Hagerott plans to meet with business leaders. And when school starts this fall, he plans to go to the campuses.
"I suspect I'll get some feedback," said Hagerott.
