Sealed with a Kiss

11/8/2009:

In 1954, Marilyn Wentz was crowned homecoming queen of the University of North Dakota. It was announced by the Bismarck Tribune on this date through a photograph printed in the newspaper; the pretty girl forever caught in a state of high emotions, laughing and looking ecstatic as she sported her new crown.

The girl was standing by the university president of the time, George Starcher, and in his dark suit and spectacles, he looked far more solemn. Yet there was a twinkle in his eye and a "cat-that-got-in-the-cream look" on his face.

And clued in by the caption of the photo, Tribune readers found the significance of this captured moment: after granting Marilyn Wentz with her crown, president Starcher sealed the deal with a kiss.
