2/15/2009:
On this date in 1939, a bit of the red, white and pink holiday spirit lingered as the paper reported on a special Valentine’s Day break the North Dakota House of Representatives took to celebrate the women in that parliament.
The men sent baskets of “gay spring cut flowers” to Miss Brynhild Haugland and Mrs. George Ista, the two women serving in the House.
They also sent a basket to former representative Minnie Craig, the first woman to serve as speaker of any state’s House of Representatives.
The act was a nod to the fact that women were attaining the same rights as men—even in government.
As Representative Kluver reflected, “mere man once scoffed at the saying, the hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world.”
