Carney Song Contest

2/23/2013:

On this date in 1948, students of the University of North Dakota music department took part in the Carney Song Contest. The annual contest started in 1911, encouraging school spirit, song writing, and college loyalty. The contest took place between the classes of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors, with each level singing Alma Mater, one of UND’s school songs, and then also a selection of original songs.

The Carney contest ran until 1953, but the Alma Mater song remains a constant for UND grads, thanks to the University’s Carillon Americana bells. Dedicated in 1963, the 305-bell carillon atop Twamley Hall rings out the tune every day.
